What Is Supplement Facts Panel?

The mandatory labelling panel on dietary supplement products that lists the product's dietary ingredients, their amounts, and their percent Daily Values. It is the supplement equivalent of the 'Nutrition Facts' panel on food products.

Why It Matters for Supplement Brands

The Supplement Facts panel is the most regulated element of your product label. Errors in this panel — wrong ingredient names, incorrect amounts, missing footnotes, improper formatting — can trigger FDA enforcement action or retail rejection, even if the product itself is perfectly safe and effective.

How It Works

The Supplement Facts panel must include (per 21 CFR 101.36):

1. **Serving size**: The recommended amount per serving. 2. **Servings per container**: Total servings in the package. 3. **Dietary ingredients**: Each ingredient listed by its common or usual name. 4. **Amount per serving**: Quantitative amount of each ingredient. 5. **% Daily Value**: For ingredients with established DVs; '†' for those without. 6. **Non-dietary ingredients**: Listed below the panel as 'Other Ingredients'. 7. **Allergen declarations**: As required.

Formatting requirements are specific and include font sizes, line weights, and layout rules that differ from the Nutrition Facts panel on food products.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using food Nutrition Facts panel formatting instead of Supplement Facts panel formatting
  • Listing ingredients by trade names instead of their common or usual names
  • Not including all non-dietary ingredients (fillers, flow agents, capsule shell) in 'Other Ingredients'
  • Using the wrong units (e.g., IU instead of mcg for Vitamin D after the 2016 DV updates)
