What Is Third-Party Testing?
Independent laboratory testing of a dietary supplement by an organisation with no financial relationship to the manufacturer. Third-party testing provides unbiased verification of a product's identity, potency, purity, and safety.
Why It Matters for Supplement Brands
Third-party testing is the gold standard for product quality verification and increasingly a market differentiator. Brands with third-party certifications (NSF, Informed Sport, USP) command premium pricing and gain access to retail channels that require certification.
How It Works
Major third-party testing programmes for supplements:
1. **NSF International**: Tests for contaminants, verifies label claims, and audits manufacturing facilities. NSF Certified for Sport® is the standard for athletic supplement testing. 2. **USP (United States Pharmacopeia)**: Verifies identity, potency, purity, and performance against USP standards. The USP Verified mark is highly respected. 3. **Informed Sport / Informed Choice**: Tests for banned substances in sport. Required by many professional athletic organisations. 4. **ConsumerLab**: Independent testing and comparison of supplement products, with results published for consumers. 5. **BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group)**: Tests for more than 700 substances prohibited in sport.
The testing process typically includes: batch testing of finished products, periodic facility audits, and random market testing of products purchased retail.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ✗Claiming 'third-party tested' without specifying which laboratory or certification programme was used
- ✗Confusing 'GMP certified' with 'third-party product testing' — they verify different things
- ✗Not maintaining current certification — many programmes require annual renewal and ongoing batch testing
- ✗Using a one-time test result to claim ongoing third-party testing status
